Local 2999 Civil Human Rights Chairman Frank Smith and Richie Franklin attended the UAW Region 8 Civil Rights Conference on October 11 - 12, 2006. The conference was held this year at Oglebay Resort in Wheeling, WV.
The conference also tied in the National & State Cap Council Reports, and the Walter P. Reuther Memorial Dedication Ceremony. A native of Wheeling, WV, a Reuther statue has been permanently placed near the Heritage Trail on the plaza near WesBanco Arena.
The Ceremony was attended by UAW President Ron Gettelfinger, Region 8 Director Gary Casteel, State and Local officials, numerous family members of Walter Reuther, as well as a great deal of Union Brothers and Sisters.
The Region 8 Civil Human Rights conference heard from speakers such as Reverend Charles L. White, Legislative Director Alan Reuther, and Dr. David T. Javersak. Director Gary Casteel gave a report, and the State Civil Rights Council Reports were also heard.
A election was also held for the officers of Region 8 Civil Rights Council for a new three year term.
A commemorative brick from the childhood home of Walter Reuther was raffled off during the conference. Brother Richie Franklin won the brick, and has graciously donated it to our local. Brick number 66 will proudly be displayed at Local 2999 in Strasburg, Va.
