JUN 24, 2009 – UAW LOCAL 2999 PROTEST

On May 22, 2009 members of UAW Local 2999 were informed that a major program for General Motors was leaving IAC-Strasburg, Virginia, and headed for Mexico. This decision was made by International Automotive Components. The transfer of this work will be completed by July 31, 2009 and will affect 110 American UAW manufacturing job from our plant.

In an effort to raise public awareness UAW members staged a demonstration in front of the facility on June 24, 2009. A hundred workers and their families showed up bearing colorful signs and American flags. Our goal was to bring attention not only to our local community, but to hopefully gain national attention on the negative effects of outsourcing, and the tolls it has on the American family.

UAW Local 2999 President Karen Foster and Bargaining Chairman Richie Franklin rally the troops.

The members of United Auto Workers Local 2999 took it to the streets to protest IAC’s decision to transfer our jobs to Mexico.

UAW Local 2999 Bargaining Committee members Scotty Miller and Hal Thompson carry signs during UAW protest.

The protest was covered by four local newspapers, two TV stations, and several radio stations carried it on their local news.. The newspaper stories are on our Archives/Photo page and the TV link is listed below.

JUN 18, 2009 – PRESS RELEASE

Below is a press release that UAW Local 2999 released to the local media.

Dear Media:

On May 22, 2009 employees of International Automotive Components of Strasburg, Virginia were notified that a major program we run for General Motors was being transferred from our plant to an IAC plant in Mexico. This move is spearheaded by IAC Corporate in Dearborn, Michigan. The movement of this program from the IAC Strasburg facility affects 110 American manufacturing jobs.

In June of 2007 the Strasburg plant employees were asked by corporate management to take concessions of $4.33 off their hourly wages & benefits. This was approved by our Union membership in hopes of keeping the plant open and that this would also help IAC bid future work for the Strasburg facility.

Besides giving concessions to IAC Corporate we the members of UAW Local 2999 and the citizens of the United States pay taxes which helped bailout General Motors who is allowing good paying American jobs to go to Mexico and other foreign countries in order to achieve a cheaper labor rate with no benefits.

United Auto Workers Local 2999 would like to protest the movement of all American jobs being outsourced to foreign countries, and we welcome anyone else who wishes to show support to walk with us. This peaceful protest is scheduled on June 24, 2009. The time of this public awareness is from 1-4 PM in front of the IAC-Strasburg facility.

For more information please call United Auto Workers Local 2999 at (540) 465-5485 or e-mail us at local@uaw2999.org.

This transition will be completed on or about July 30, 2009.

This will affect 110 American manufacturing jobs.

MAY 12, 2009 – WARN NOTIFICATION

The United Auto Workers Local 2999 have been advised that International Automotive Components - North America (IACNA - Strasburg) is hereby furnishing notification under the WARN act for layoffs and are the result of IAC’s transfer of business to plants closer to the customers manufacturing facilities. The initial scheduled layoffs are expected to commence on or about July 12, 2009.

However, this notice is in anticipation that the GMT-900 Console line is leaving our facility, and we understand that International Automotive Components and General Motors have not finalized any details.

Employees who are affected by the layoff have recall rights under our labor contract for two years or the length of his/her service whichever is less from the date of such layoff.

This is our third WARN Notification since April of 2008.

MAY 12, 2009 – BARGAINNING COMMITTEE

The Bargaining Committee has been working on our next contract. With the current state of the economy we felt that it is in our best interest to extend our current labor agreement until May 19, 2010.

We ran this by our UAW International Servicing rep, Don Cordell. He then contacted IAC Corporate Employee Relations Director, Jeff Freiburger. All parties are in agreement for a one year extension of our current labor contract.

This of course is subject to approval by our UAW membership. We will hold a ratification vote at the UAW Local 2999 Union Hall on:

Vacation pay is distributed to eligible employees as a lump sum, normally during the first week in June each year. Employees who have already met the initial requirement of completing six- (6) months of active service prior to April 1 may begin taking vacation time for which they are eligible during the year on January 1.
